when do you change your electrolysis tank?

Is there a rule of thumb for when to refresh an electrolysis tank? Mine's starting to look like creme brulee on top, and the results are getting weaker. I saved a tougher job... a painted, bolt-together tripod stand, for the last run since it didn't fit in my lye bath. The nuts and bolts are locked under thick paint and some rust, so I figured electrolysis might do the heavy lifting. There was plenty of bubbling, but the results aren't great. Paint is stubborn, and the tank is clearly overdue for a clean/change. It's back in the lye bath for now, but I'm curious: do you guys swap solution on a schedule, or only when results really start to drop off?

The "creme brulee" layer you're seeing on the surface is a clear sign that the electrolyte solution is becoming saturated with dissolved rust and other contaminants. This saturation reduces the solution's conductivity. Bubbling is a good indicator that the tank is working, a weaker reaction despite the bubbles means it is time for a refresh.

You can change your solution every few months of regular use,. Some wait until they notice a decline in how fast the rust is coming off but I prefer being proactive.

I recommend changing the solution and cleaning out the tank when you have a big or stubborn job to do.

You'll pick it up quick, Bob, it's pretty straightforward once you set up your tank. Just a charger, washing soda in water, and a good sacrificial anode. Whenever you're ready I can walk you through or if I'm not available, I trust there'd be a lot of capable people here that can do just that
