so ive heard bacon grease is the secret weapon for cast iron seasoning but does it actually work better than oil some say it gives that unbeatable non stick finish others think it just turns sticky over time anyone got the best method for seasoning cast iron with bacon grease or is it all hype

Oh man, bacon grease is like the OG cast iron magic, I use it all the time cos it gives a kind of deep, rich layer that I really love and smells amazing while seasoning too. see yo, the trick is to wipe it real thin and bake it long, like 450°F for an hour.

This is so cool. Bacon grease can definitely work, that reminds me. But only if you bake it on properly thin layers. If not, it's easily gonna go rancid and sticky! Best way to go about it is to wipe the cast iron with a super thin layer of grease then bake at 450 degrees for 1 hour. Twice repeat.

Maybe trying a small pan with bacon grease to see if you like the results? but be mindful with the thin layers and baking

I just got a small pan. This seasoning method sounds too good to pass up. Everything is better with bacon!

Bacon grease can work but I highly recommend that you strain it first. If you have little bacon bits in the grease, those can basically char and become sticky mess points during the seasoning process. You want a smooth and slick layer, not any bacon dust or bumps to be found.

I do all my pans with bacon grease and now and then use grapeseed oil. Wiped very thin and baked for an hour + cool down if I have had a lot of sticky food or burned something.
Daily use gets either grapeseed or bacon grease. A tiny amount wiped as dry as I can get it. My pans are as slick as they get!! Lots of fun cooking on cast iron and high carbon steel!!

I have to use carbon steel now as that is all my arthritis hands can hold. I still season with Crisco and it works great for me. I will try straining bacon grease and season some pans with it. I also have to try some grapeseed oil. I never thought of grapeseed oil before. Thanks.
