I inherited several rusted cast iron pieces and want to use electrolysis to restore them, but I’m concerned about the safety risks.
I wonder, is this process safe, or is it genuinely high risk even with precautions?
I understand the dangers of mixing electricity and water, but I need to know the actual likelihood of a fatal mistake before I offer to restore the rest of the family's collection.
I’ve researched the material extensively, and am now looking for real world feedback from experienced users on how to stay safe and avoid a reunion with my ancestor

Just restore it with electrolysis because it is much safer.
 
just a heads up, getting the heavy gunk off takes more than a day, so you’ll need a long term setup. keep the charger dry but make sure it has plenty of airflow so it doesn't overheat. you should also cover your connections with some kind of insulator (this is for safety)
also use a well vented lid for the tank
electrolysis releases hydrogen and oxygen, which can literally blow up if they build up in a tight space with a spark.

hydrogen is super light, though, so as long as your lid is vented, it’ll float away safely
 
@p4nUp you know that you're typically working with 12 volts, which is the same as a car battery. I understand that you should never be careless with electricity and water, but 12V isn't going to jump out and grab you like wall power

The real danger isn't electrocution, it's a short circuit creating heat or a spark. as long as you turn the power off before reaching into the water, the risk is extremely low
