When grandpops passed, he gave me this Griswold 8 cast iron Dutch oven... I haven't had much use to it. Now, I saw that my son is really really interested in cooking (even asked me to enroll him in culinary school) so I want to give this to him now, put it to good use. Do you know where I can find or how I can determine the age of this Griswold 8? I cannot find any info as well, I'd like to include some facts with it once I hand it over so he's gonna enjoy better I suppose...

The logo has your answer. if the logo looks has "Erie" with large and slanted letters then it dates from 1906 to 1920. If the logo is plain "GRISWOLD" with large bold letters on a square cross then it dates from 1920 to 1930. If the logo is slanted "Griswold" on a double circle cross then it dates from 1939 to 1957. you can also check the bottom, the older models have the heat ring on the bottom and the more modern ones are smooth in the bottom. hope youll find this answer helpful

it's likely from the early 1900s because of the large block griswold logo, then the "8" is the size, not the year. Look for a pattern number on the bottom, that should be able to help you date it with online charts

That's a wonderful heirloom to pass down, especially to a son showing interest in cooking! A Griswold 8 Dutch oven is a fantastic and versatile piece
and I agree with @chickfilA you can see the logo, bcs it says a lot about the year of production

I wish I could inherit a cool cast iron like that, and kudos to your son!

This is a fantastic item to hand down! Just take a look at the bottom for the pattern number and logo style. If you find the large block "GRISWOLD" with "ERIE, PA" underneath, it probably dates back to the 1920s to 1940s. The Cast Iron Collector website is a great resource for identifying it. It's a meaningful way to pass on some family history that your son will actually appreciate and use.

I want ya'll to know this thread has cost me several hours of looking & reading. I find I do have a Griswold #7 - looks like dates to the 1920 to 1930s - is that correct? I think this came from my Grandma to her Daughter (my Mom) then to me.
