Cast iron like skillets with oil and baking can create a natural black finish. So I always suggest to first time users to ALWAYS use a food-grade oil and bake at a low temperature for several hours. This might work well for the kettle too.
 
for kettles, you should be more careful.
don't use oil on the inside of a tea kettle bcs it will make your tea taste like old grease
also, any modern cast iron kettles have a shiny black enamel coating on the inside. if yours has this, do not season it at all. You'll just ruin the enamel
