I got a Lodge Dutch Oven that a collector friend had cleaned with a two-week lye soak and then reseasoned. But the first time I used it the food smelled and tasted so bad it was like cooking in plastic so I had to throw it all out. Now the Dutch oven has been sitting in the woodshed for months and it still stinks up the whole room. I have another piece, a Wagner number 8 that I just put in a trash can with a three-gallon lye solution to clean. I am hoping to pull the pieces out in about two weeks. Also, I have a Crispbee puck for seasoning, and I have never used that brand before, so is it any good? Do you think the terrible smell on my first Dutch oven is from the lye or the seasoning and what can I do to get that awful smell out? Thanks much.

It can really go rancid, unfortunately. But manually seasoning some heavily carbonized spots may resist it altogether.
I know some who like beeswax products but I don't.

have you try using baking soda & hydrogen peroxide?
I'm serious. just fill the pan with 1/2" of hydrogen peroxide and add 1/4cup of baking soda, then bring to a boil.
Once the mixture is foamy, turn the heat off and let it sit for around 10min
then, pour the mixture down the drain and rinse with warm water

I would strip the whole oven and then use the method of castiron-mike, then reseason it. It sounds like it could be rancid.
