does cast iron waffle iron even heat on electric?

I've been eyeing a vintage cast iron waffle iron, but here's the catch: I'm on an electric range. Does anyone here actually run one on electric successfully?

My gut says it won't heat evenly... hotspots in the middle, cooler edges... and that you'll be flipping and fussing with it constantly. Gas makes sense since you can control the flame, but electric coils or glass tops? Not so sure.

So before I drop money on an iron I might never use: anyone with first-hand experience? Worth it, or better to stick with a modern plug-in waffle maker unless I move back to gas?

Cast iron waffle irons can be used on electric stoves, but keep in mind that they heat unevenly, particularly on glass cooktops. You'll want to preheat them for a bit longer than usual and flip the waffles often, so be prepared for some trial and error. If you're looking for convenience, a plug-in waffle maker is probably the better choice unless you're really into vintage options.

For crispy waffles with that classic taste, nothing beats old cast iron. But if you need waffles fast, especially on busy mornings, an electric maker is the way to go.

Vintage cast iron waffle irons were designed for open flame, so on an electric coil or glass top you’ll often need to rotate the iron a quarter turn every minute or so to even out the heat. Preheating both halves separately before the first pour also helps reduce the cold spot issue. Have you had a chance to try one yet, or are you still deciding between vintage and a modern plug in?

Have you tried placing a cast iron diffuser plate between the burner and the waffle iron? If not, you might want to consider trying it. This helps to spread the heat more evenly and also reduce hot spots.
